ENGLAND ATHLETICS INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN RUNNING 2024

England Athletics Mountain Running Championships

Senior: To be held in conjunction with the British Athletics Uphill European Championships selection race, Dodd Wood, Skiddaw on 19 April 2024.

U20: To be held in conjunction with the British Athletics U20 Uphill European Championships selection race, Dodd Wood, Skiddaw on 19 April 2024.

Representative opportunities: 

The committee will select the best available teams to represent England, although where shown some teams will be selected as development teams to give them experience of international competition.

• All events in 2024 are subject to funding and England Athletics may amend the policies at any point.
• Selectors view trials as the primary means of selecting the teams. Where there is no trial or an athlete is unable to compete in the trial race, it is the athlete’s responsibility to provide the Chair of Selectors, Duncan Richards with details of all performances they wish to be considered at the selection meeting. This information must be provided in advance of the trial race where there is one or before the advertised selection date.
• Athletes will usually be informed of their selection within a week of the trial and/or deadline for expressions of interest.
• Selection of all athletes is subject to the agreement of the athlete’s training and racing programme between the date of selection and the representative race by the committee. England Athletics reserves the right to de-select any athlete who is deemed unfit or injured in the lead up to the event.
• Athletes wishing to be selected for races abroad must have a valid UK passport for the country they are travelling to and be eligible to represent England in international competitions. The selection committee reserves the right to de-select any athlete who does not provide all the information requested (including passport details) within a week of selection.
• For all races, if the selectors believe that a minimum performance standard for selection has not been achieved, they reserve the right not to select a full team. To clarify – England Athletics do not intend to send teams to international events composed of athletes who have not demonstrated the level of performance required.

Events

Event: Senior Home International (Glas Tulaichean Uphill, Glenshee, Scotland)

• Date: 11 May 2024
• Selection Date: 22 April 2024
• Trial: 19 April 2024 Dodd Wood, Skiddaw. (Entry on S.I. entries)
• Team Composition: Up to 4 senior men, 2 U23 men, 4 senior women and 2 U23 women may be selected. N.B. There will only be an A team. U23 athletes are defined as born in 2002-2004 inclusive. The quota of 4 senior athletes may include U23 athletes if more than two are selected.
• Selection Details: The first 2 senior men, 2 senior women, 1 U23 man and 1 U23 woman will gain selection from the Trial Race (subject to performances being of an appropriate standard) with the remaining places to be decided by the selectors.

Event: International U18 Mountain Running Cup, Palencia, Spain

• Date: 20-22 June 2024
• Selection Date: 13 May 2024
• Trial: 12 May 2024, Sedbergh, FRA Junior Championships Race.
• Team Composition: Up to 4 junior men and 4 junior women (born within the years 2007 / 2008; younger athletes are not eligible) may be selected.
• Selection Details: The first 3 junior men and 3 junior women will gain selection from the trial race with the remaining places to be decided by the selectors.

Event: Snowdon International, Llanberis, Wales 

• Date: 20 July 2024
• Selection Date: 17 June 2024
• Trial:  15 June 2022, Buttermere Sailbeck, English Championships counter
• Team Composition: 4 senior men and 4 senior women may be selected.
• Selection Details: The first 2 senior men and 2 senior women will gain selection with the remaining places to be decided by the selectors.

Event: Junior Home International, Glendalough, Ireland

• Date:  14 September 2024
• Selection Date:  22 July 2024
• Trial: 21 July 2024, Cracoe, Yorkshire (in conjunction with BOFRA Championships race)
• Team Composition: 4 U20 men and 4 U20 women (age at 31 December 2024 – this includes athletes born in 2005, 2006 and 2007), 4 U17 boys and 4 U17 girls (age at 31 December 2024– this includes athletes born in 2008 and 2009) may be selected
• Selection Details:    
  U20: The first two athletes from the trial race will be selected, remaining places to be decided by the selectors.
  U17: The first two athletes from the trial race will be selected, remaining places to be decided by the selectors.

Event: England Senior Development Team; World Cup Final, 21km/1337m, Trofeo Nasego, Italy.

• Date:  31st August-1st September 2024.
• Selection: This is a development opportunity for senior athletes to gain international representative experience. Athletes interested in selection are required to email an expression of interest to Chair of selectors by 16 August 2024
• Selection Date: 17 August 2024
• Team Composition: Up to 6 athletes in total (3 men/3 women) may be selected.
• Selection Details: To be eligible an athlete must be at least 20 on the 31 December in the year of competition and offer evidence of high performance over relevant distance and ascent.

Event: Senior and U23 Development Teams; Trofeo Vanoni relays, Italy. 7k/500m.

• Date: 20 October 2024
• Trial: Development opportunities for Senior and U23 athletes to gain international representative experience. Athletes interested in selection are required to email an expression of interest to Chair of selectors by 6 September 2024
• Selection Date: 8 September 2024
• Team Composition: 3 senior men, 3 senior women, 3 U23 men, 3 U23 women
• Selection Details: Athletes who have performed at a high standard during the season but have not been selected for any Great Britain off road, mountain or trail teams during 2024 are eligible for places. To be eligible an athlete must be at least 20 and at most 22 on the 31 December in the year of competition. (i.e., born 2002-2004)

Training Camps: 

These camps are aimed at establishing the building blocks of future high performance in endurance running by developing skills and knowledge amongst junior runners and coaches.  

• The Introduction to Mountain Running Camp is one day camp for juniors who have reached the age where International representation is a possibility, but is intended for any juniors showing potential who wish to improve.

• The Performance in Mountain Running Camp is for more experienced junior athletes transitioning to senior racing, it includes some training sessions on local hills and is residential.

Both camps are intended to be enjoyable, stimulating, and interesting, building relationships with peers and include talks delivered by experienced coaches, physiotherapists and sports scientists as well as inputs and insights from elite athletes.

Camp: Introduction to International Mountain Running

• Age Group: 14-16 years

• Venue: Sedbergh
• Selection Criteria:      
  Top 10 in FRA Junior Championships
  Placed in FRA Junior Championship or BOFRA races
  County standard XC, Track or road
  Performances of similar standard to the above – please ask!

Camp: Performance in International Mountain Running

• Age Group: 17-19 years
• Date:  22-24 March 2024
• Venue: Stainforth Bunkhouse, Yorkshire
• Selection Criteria:   
  Athletes should be committed to mountain running in 2023 and be planning to run the British Athletics World and/or European Trials.
  GB mountain running vest
  Top 10 in Junior Home International
  Top 10 English Schools, National or Inter-Counties Cross Country
  Top 6 in Area Cross Country
